(Students entering grades 2 - 3) Fundamentals of Creative Writing I
Campers will learn the time-tested methods to overcome writer’s block. As they do so, they will write short stories, poems and short skits. (Students entering grades 4 - 6) Fundamentals of Creative Writing II Campers already familiar with our methods will learn effective character development and plot construction, while writing longer short stories. For incoming campers, they’ll be able to easily jump right in. (Students entering grades 6 - 10) Story Writing III Effective dialogue and descriptive language will be taught to the advance camper, and how both can be used to reveal character and move along plot. (Students entering grades 9 - 12) High School English Students will learn the basics of the five paragraph essay, including the importance of staying on topic and developing a thesis. |
Academic Writing PM Session | (Students entering grades 2 - 3) Fundamentals of English I
Students will learn proper punctuation and grammar. Paragraph structure and sentence construction will be taught in an encouraging atmosphere. (Students entering grades 4 - 6) Fundamentals of English II Students will learn diction (word choice) and syntax (sentence structure) in the construction of effective paragraphs. (Students entering grades 6 - 8) Expository Writing III Proper research methods will be taught to students and how to effectively integrate their research into their expository essays. (Students entering grades 9 - 12) SAT Prep I (Language Arts Only) We will prepare students for the critical reading and writing portion of the SAT. Students will hone their reading comprehension skills and understanding of grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. |
| week 2 07/12 - 07/16 | Creative Writing AM Session | (Students entering grades 2 - 3) Story Writing I
The five elements of story writing will be the focus during this week. Campers will take home a portfolio of short stories in various genre. (Students entering grades 4 - 6) Story Writing II Campers will progress into genre writing and how each genre has it’s own set of particular rules that drives character creation, setting, and even plot. They will take home a portfolio of their work. (Students entering grades 6 - 10) Publishing Insights into publishing and how books eventual-ly reach the bookstores. Campers will also have the opportunity to create their own bound books to take home. (Students entering grades 9 - 12) High School Essays Made Simple Students will discuss how to take an essay from an assignment or idea to an actual paper. Teachers will go over good sources with students and pre-writing exercises that will help organize their thoughts. |
Academic Writing PM Session | (Students entering grades 2 - 3) The Fundamental Essay
Students will learn about complex paragraph structure and the fundamental essay . Games will help improve reading comprehension and vocabulary. (Students entering grades 4 - 6) The Five Paragraph Essay Students will learn the five paragraph essay which is the structure favored by school teachers. They also learn how to outline their essays before writing them. (Students entering grades 6 - 8) Rhetoric Crafting an effective thesis and how to prove them will be the focus of this week as students learn the art of the argumentative essay. (Students entering grades 9 - 12) SAT Prep II (Language Arts Only) Students will take three practice tests that simulate real life testing conditions. As part of the tests students will also have to write a timed essay after being given a prompt. |
| week3 07/19 - 07/23 | Creative Writing AM Session | (Students entering grades 2 - 3) Poetry and Playwriting I
Campers will learn the art of writing verse and emoting. Participants will take home a portfolio of poems and a complete one or two-act play. (Students entering grades 4 - 6) Poetry and Playwriting II Campers will learn the various types of verse, composing their own poems. For playwriting, campers will understand why every good play has a strong premise. At the end of the week, campers will bring home a portfolio of poems and a one or two-act play. (Students entering grades 6 - 10) A Journalism Primer What is a lede? What are the elements that make a story newsworthy? Campers will learn the fundamentals that make a news story and get a chance to interview people for their own stories. (Students entering grades 9 - 12) High School English Students will learn the basics of the five paragraph essay, including the importance of staying on topic and developing a thesis. |
Academic Writing PM Session | (Students entering grades 2 - 3) Essay Writing
Students will learn how to write narrative, per-suasive, descriptive, and informative essays. They’ll also learn revision and writing subsequent drafts of their essays. Games will help im-prove reading comprehension and vocabulary. (Students entering grades 4 - 6) Expository Essay Writing Student will acquaint themselves with the expository essay, learning how to use facts in their papers and explain their topic concisely and clearly. (Students entering grades 6 - 8) Essay Writing Students will learn the art of criticism, and how to properly deconstruct a story in their essays. They’ll also get a chance to write personal narratives with a theme. (Students entering grades 9 - 12) SAT Prep I (Language Arts Only) We will prepare students for the critical reading and writing portion of the SAT. | week 4 07/26 - 07/30 | Creative Writing AM Session | (Students entering grades 2 - 3) Create-a-Book
Adding descriptive detail to a story in the genre of their choice will be the focus of this week. Campers will take home a fairly long story with detailed character, setting, and a well-formed plot. (Students entering grades 4 - 6) Story Writing III Campers will infuse their stories with descriptive language, creating vibrant pictures in the reader’s mind. They also learn how revisions can make their stories better. (Students entering grades 6 - 10) Advanced Journalism After learning the fundamentals, campers will learn how, when, and why to break them. They’ll also put the finishing touches on their own stories to be published in a Lekha newspaper. (Students entering grades 9 - 12) High School Essays Made Simple Students will discuss how to take an essay from an assignment or idea to an actual paper. Teachers will go over good sources with students and pre-writing exercises that will help organize their thoughts. |

Using group and peer review methods, students will learn to edit written works. They will also use their own stores as works to edit. (Students entering grades 4 - 6) Editing II Revision. Revision. Revision. That’s the credo of any writer, and students will learn how to properly revise their essays on their own. (Students entering grades 6 - 8) You Are the Editor Students will get a chance to edit their peers in a peer review, which will help them better edit their own work. (Students entering grades 9 - 12) SAT Prep II (Language Arts Only) Students will take three practice tests that simulate real life testing conditions.
